![]() ![]() What if your music is running at a different sampling rate to the notification? Not a problem: Windows just resamples all the audio to one fixed sample rate. It needs to mix that notification bell or sound into your music. So, while you are playing some music, Windows might want to alert you to incoming email or some other important matter. A computer is a multipurpose device that can run many processes and programs at the same time. While many of us use computers for high end audio, that’s not what they are designed for. Why does Windows mess with your sound?īefore we start, understand that it’s right and proper that Windows takes control over audio and sometimes plays around with it. So, let’s see how you can set up a DAC with Windows so that it gets bit-perfect sound from your computer. But are you getting the best that it can deliver? My guess is that most people using DACs on their computer are getting less than perfect sound because the sound is being processed by Windows in some way before it even gets to the DAC. You can just plug most of them into most computers and straight away you’ll get a marked improvement in sound quality. There are lots of fine DACs available for this job, priced from just a few tens of dollars up to many thousands. But a computer’s audio output is mediocre at best, so you will need to add a USB Digital to Analogue converter. It can stream high-resolution Master Quality Authenticated music from TIDAL, or ultra-high-resolution music from its own storage, or from your network storage. This option requires compatible hardware and display drivers.A Windows computer can make a great source for high-fidelity sound. Disable Automatic Display Settings Changing under Options > Video > Display Settings.Toggle Options > Video > VideoClock on and off.If it is off, but you have a compatible HDMI receiver or decoder at the other end, then maybe try turning it on. In any case, it is useful to see what happens. MC can decode most common high-quality embedded audio formats without issue (see the setup guide for DTS-MA formats), and you may not need to use your external receiver's decoder. If it is turned on, try to turn it off and see what happens. If you believe your system should support Red October HQ, or it has in the past but is now not working, you may need to update your drivers. Systems with lower end CPUs but adequate GPUs may be adequate if hardware acceleration is enabled and supported on your GPU. Generally, a computer similar to or better than the Recommended System in the Installation Guide is required to get adequate performance in Red October HQ mode in all scenarios. This will help narrow down the issue (and will give you usable video playback until the problem with HQ mode can be diagnosed or fixed). Even if your computer should be able to handle (in theory, or your belief, or in the past, whatever) it is useful to test it in Red October Standard mode. Only once you are sure you can get acceptable performance when in Red October Standard mode does it make sense to try in Red October HQ mode. Try with Hardware Acceleration both enabled and disabled.Change Video Mode to Red October Standard.Open Options > Video > General Video Settings. ![]() ![]() Most importantly, try Red October Standard, with and without Hardware Acceleration enabled. If the issue is with Video Playback, it is worth checking over your Video setup as well. ![]() Further information: Media Center Troubleshooting Guide ![]()
